Leading Personally and Professionally
What is Leadership?
In an organisational context, the role of a leader is to provide a powerful vision, articulate that vision clearly, inspire and motivate teams to be aligned with the vision, and guide with integrity and authenticity. Leaders must have the willingness and desire to empower others to step up and take the lead for themselves.
Leadership is an attitude of ambition, determination and desire to achieve. It creates a contagious energy that people want to follow and join naturally.
Effective leaders not only know themselves well, they also have an in-depth knowledge of each individual in their team, understanding their career goals and what motivates them. A leader builds trust with people, is committed to helping each person achieve their goals, and goes about setting people up for success.
Leadership is not only about your position or title; it applies to individuals in any area of life and work who want to perform to their own personal best, and develop the qualities necessary to support and enhance the experiences of others in every aspect of life.
Self-Leadership - Becoming an Effective Leader
Before you can lead others effectively you must be able to lead yourself.
Self-leadership is about developing increased self-awareness. It involves being aware of your purpose and being grounded in your own sense of self. With a strong and authentic personal brand you are empowered to influence, inspire and lead others with confidence.
The basis to developing confidence as a leader comes from asking and reflecting on some fundamental self-identity questions such as:
- Who am I?
- How do I show up professionally and personally?
- How do I ‘do’ life and work?
- What is my purpose?
- What is my vision?
If you want to achieve your true potential and become the leader you aspire to be, the starting point is being aware of who you are.
Self-awareness is the key to effective leadership. It can involve:
- Clarifying your values and being true to them
- Defining your purpose
- Creating your vision
- Understanding your strengths, talents and skills
- Becoming more focused and intentional
- Building emotional intelligence (EQ)
- Developing resilience to manage stress
- Successfully navigating change and transition
- Facing fear with action (being courageous)
- Shifting limiting beliefs to supportive beliefs
- Changing destructive or unhelpful cycles of behaviour
- Making wise decisions and taking meaningful actions
- Bringing your authentic self to both life and work
